Like most people in Leeds, I started where Google usually takes you — searching TharavaduUyareDaastaanMy LahoreAagrah, or Akbars. I’ve eaten at all of them. They’re solid, familiar, reliable. But on this visit, I wanted something different — still authentic, still Indian, but less predictable.

That’s how I booked Kerala Canteen.

When You’re Searching for Tharavadu… But Want Something Lighter

I usually associate Tharavadu with proper Kerala food — deep flavours, tradition, comfort. Kerala Canteen surprised me because the flavours were just as authentic, but the format was different.

It felt more flexible — more suited to how people actually dine now.

Quiet thought: This is what I wish Tharavadu had when I want variety.

People search Uyare when they want South Indian food done right. Kerala Canteen keeps that South Indian soul, but it’s clearly designed for Leeds city centre life.

Service was smooth. Food came at a good pace.
I could see why pre-theatre diners like this place.

This didn’t feel like a “special trip” restaurant — it felt like somewhere I’d return to regularly.


Daastaan-Level Skill, Without the Formality

I respect Daastaan. It’s refined, elegant, and deliberate. But not every meal needs ceremony.

Kerala Canteen felt chef-led in the same way, just without the stiffness.
The food had clarity and confidence — nothing was trying too hard.

I caught myself thinking: This is casual fine dining done properly.


Why I Didn’t Choose My Lahore, Aagrah or Akbars This Time

If you’re searching My LahoreAagrah, or Akbar’s, you’re probably booking for groups, familiarity, or scale.

Kerala Canteen isn’t about size or noise.

The room felt calm. The food felt intentional.
I didn’t feel rushed, and I didn’t feel like just another table.

That matters more than people realise.

Halfway through the meal, someone mentioned they’d been ranked 4th in Yorkshire by the Yorkshire Evening Post — the only Indian restaurant on the list.

Suddenly, it made sense.

This place isn’t chasing trends.

If I’m honest, I don’t think Kerala Canteen is trying to replace Tharavadu, Dishoom, Daastaan, My Lahore, Aagrah, or Akbars.

It’s filling the gap between them.

  • Chef-led without being formal
  • Modern without losing tradition
  • City-centre friendly without being rushed

That’s why, next time I search best Indian restaurant in Leeds city centre, I already know where I’m booking.
