The New Kerala Canteen Menu Is Coming This October

Recipes from our Kerala chefs, paired with Yorkshire produce

There’s something special about launching a new menu.

For us, it isn’t simply about changing a few dishes or putting new prices on a menu. It’s about returning to the food that inspires Kerala Canteen the recipes, flavours and memories of Kerala, combined with the incredible produce we have here in Yorkshire.

This October, Kerala Canteen is launching a brand-new food menu.

There are new dishes, refreshed favourites, dishes we have deliberately kept at the same price, and some exciting new additions that we think you’re going to love.

But we also want to be completely open with you about something important.

Why Are Some Prices Going Up?

The reality of running a restaurant has changed significantly.

The cost of ingredients has increased. Food inflation has affected our suppliers. Fuel and transportation costs have increased. Energy and operating costs have increased.

And, like every independent restaurant, we have had to make some difficult decisions about our menu.

So, from October, some of our prices will increase.

But here’s the important part:

We haven’t increased everything.

We’ve taken a hit ourselves and deliberately kept the price of many dishes unchanged wherever we can.

We’ve looked at the cost of every dish, the ingredients, the preparation, the portion and what we believe represents fair value.

Because we know our customers are facing exactly the same pressures.

Eating out should still feel like something you can enjoy.

We Want to Protect Value

We could have simply increased prices across the entire menu.

We haven’t.

Instead, we’ve tried to find a balance.

Some dishes will increase. Many dishes will remain unchanged. And we’ve introduced subsidised lunch pricing on selected dishes.

Our aim is simple:

Keep Kerala Canteen accessible while continuing to serve the food we are proud of.

Our Subsidised Lunch Pricing

One of the things we’re particularly keen to protect is lunch.

Our Canteen Thali remains one of the best ways to experience Kerala Canteen.

Choose your curry:

  • Beef
  • Chicken
  • Vegetable Korma

Served with:

  • Masala Potato
  • Basmati Rice
  • Porotta
  • Poppadom

Lunch £9.95

Lunch pricing is available until 2pm.

It’s our way of making sure you can still enjoy a proper Kerala Canteen meal without having to wait for a special occasion.

And Yes — We’re Still About Value

We also want to put the new pricing into perspective.

Kerala Canteen is designed to give you the experience of a modern, stylish Indian restaurant, but we are still focused on keeping our food competitively priced.

When you compare us with restaurants in the same premium Indian dining space, including Dishoom, many of our dishes remain lower priced.

For example, our October menu includes:

  • Butter Chicken Masala — £16.50
  • Lamb & Chickpea Masala — £15.75
  • Beef & Bone Marrow Curry — £16.50
  • King Prawn Curry — £18.00
  • Salmon Green Mango Curry — £17.50
  • Canteen Chicken Biriyani — £16.50
  • Slow Cooked Beef Biriyani — £17.50

Dishoom Leeds currently lists dishes including Chicken Ruby at £18.90, Mutton Pepper Fry at £20.50 and Lamb Biryani at £21.50.

But price isn’t the only difference.

At Kerala Canteen, you’re getting something very different.

You’re getting Kerala tapas, Yorkshire produce, cocktails, a distinctive atmosphere and dishes inspired by the food we grew up with.

You can share several tapas, try something completely new, order a curry, share a biriyani, have a cocktail or come in for our subsidised lunch Thali.

We want the experience to feel special without every visit feeling expensive.

Now Let’s Talk About the Food…

Because ultimately, that’s what this new menu is really about.

The October menu is built around our simple philosophy:

RECIPES FROM OUR KERALA CHEFS

PAIRED WITH YORKSHIRE PRODUCE.

Kerala has one of the most exciting food cultures in India.

It’s a cuisine shaped by the coast, spices, coconut, seafood, agriculture, communities and centuries of trade.

And we’re bringing those flavours to Leeds.

Canteen Lamb Shank

One of the dishes we’re particularly excited about.

A 14oz lamb shank, slow-braised with spices and served on top of lamb & chickpea keema, with hasselback potatoes.

Slow cooking.
Deep Kerala spices.
Rich lamb.
And a proper comforting plate of food.

Canteen Lamb Shank — £26.95

This is Kerala Canteen at its most indulgent.

Octopus Moilee

Something a little different.

Our Octopus Moilee brings tender octopus together with the delicate, aromatic flavours of a Kerala moilee.

Kerala has an extraordinary relationship with seafood, and coconut-based seafood dishes are an important part of the state’s culinary identity.

This is our interpretation of that tradition.

Octopus Moilee — £12.95

Sea Bass Pollichathu

Kerala and seafood are inseparable.

Our Sea Bass Pollichathu is seared sea bass served with tempered cherry tomato and a tangy masala base.

The freshness of the fish meets the warmth of Kerala spices.

£11.95

King Prawn Curry

Tail-on king prawns in a lightly spiced Kerala village curry cooked with green mango.

Fresh.
Fragrant.
Slightly tangy.
And full of Kerala character.

£18.00

Beef & Bone Marrow Curry

One of our signature dishes stays firmly on the menu.

Slow-cooked Yorkshire beef chuck and bone marrow in a simple Kerala Toddy Shop-style recipe.

Toddy shops are part of Kerala’s food culture, where robust, spicy dishes are traditionally enjoyed alongside local drinks.

This is our take on that style of cooking.

£16.50

Trivandrum Fried Chicken

A little taste of our hometown.

Our Trivandrum Fried Chicken is lightly spiced and served with fried garlic yoghurt.

Crispy.
Spiced.
Creamy.

And very difficult to share.

£8.95

Beef Curry Pie

This is where Kerala meets Yorkshire.

Our Beef & Bone Marrow Curry is served inside a 3-inch Yorkshire pudding, topped with mature cheddar.

Think rich Kerala beef curry.

Think Yorkshire pudding.

Put them together.

Beef Curry Pie — £9.50

Green Pepper Lamb Chop

Yorkshire lamb meets the flavours of Trivandrum.

A 4oz Yorkshire lamb chop in a green pepper marinade, served with potato and mint yoghurt.

Available as one or two chops.

From £9.00

Gunpowder Potatoes

A Kerala Canteen favourite.

Triple-cooked hasselback potatoes tossed in our signature gunpowder spice.

Crispy.
Fluffy.
Spicy.

And perfect for sharing.

£9.50

Mini Broccoli Masala Dosa

Our vegetarian and vegan dishes are an important part of the new menu.

Our beetroot-flavoured dosa pancake comes with broccoli & potato masala and a butternut squash sambhar dip.

A completely different way to experience dosa.

£8.95

Paneer Pepper Fry

Indian cottage cheese cooked in black pepper masala and served with pickled onions.

Peppery.
Rich.
Tangy.

£8.50

Salmon Green Mango Curry

Skin-on salmon in a green mango coconut curry.

The richness of salmon works beautifully with the freshness and acidity of green mango.

£17.50

Butter Chicken Masala — With a Kerala Touch

We know butter chicken.

But ours comes with a Kerala twist.

Chicken breast pieces cooked in a roasted coconut and spice sauce.

A familiar British-Indian classic with our own Kerala influence.

£16.50

The Biriyani

No Kerala Canteen menu would be complete without biriyani.

Our Slow Cooked Beef Biriyani uses 3-hour braised Yorkshire beef shin, biriyani masala and yoghurt, mixed with short-grain kaima basmati rice.

Our Canteen Chicken Biriyani brings lightly spiced chicken together with biriyani spices, yoghurt and fragrant kaima rice.

Slow Cooked Beef Biriyani — £17.50
Canteen Chicken Biriyani — £16.50

Vegetarian & Vegan

We haven’t forgotten our vegetarian and vegan guests.

The new menu includes:

  • Chilli & Tamarind Cauliflower
  • Gunpowder Potatoes
  • Mini Broccoli Masala Dosa
  • Fried Idli & Butternut Sambhar
  • Green Seasonal Vegetable Korma
  • And more

Our Green Seasonal Vegetable Korma combines broccoli, peas, beans and courgettes with a regional Nilgiri korma sauce.

£14.50

And Then There’s Sunday Roast

But this isn’t your traditional Sunday roast.

At Kerala Canteen, our Sunday roast has always had a little attitude.

T-Bone Steak

Curried T-bone steak, beef & bone marrow curry, gunpowder potatoes and chilli-tamarind cauliflower served in a giant Yorkshire pudding.

Approximately 1kg

£31.95

Half Roasted Chilli Garlic Chicken

Half roasted chicken in a chilli-garlic marinade, hasselback potatoes and classic onion gravy.

£24.95

Canteen Lamb Shank

Our 14oz slow-braised lamb shank with spices, lamb & chickpea keema and hasselback potatoes.

£26.95

Why We’re Making These Changes

We don’t want to hide behind a menu.

Yes, some prices are increasing.

Food costs have risen. Fuel costs have risen. The cost of running a restaurant has risen.

And we have to respond to that responsibly.

But we also know that our customers are feeling the same pressures.

So we’ve tried to find a balance.

We’ve taken the hit on a number of dishes. We’ve kept prices unchanged where we can. We’ve introduced subsidised lunch pricing. And we’ve continued to invest in the food, ingredients and experience.

Because we don’t want to compromise what Kerala Canteen is about.

A New Menu. The Same Kerala Canteen.

From the coast of Kerala to Yorkshire.

From Octopus Moilee to Beef & Bone Marrow Curry.

From King Prawn Curry to Canteen Lamb Shank.

From Trivandrum Fried Chicken to our giant T-Bone Steak Yorkshire pudding.

From Gunpowder Potatoes to Mini Broccoli Masala Dosa.

This October, we’re bringing you a menu that reflects where we’ve come from — and where we’re going.

Some prices are going up.

Many are staying the same.

Lunch pricing is being protected.

And the food is getting even more exciting.

So come for lunch.

Bring the family. Bring your friends. Share some tapas. Try the Octopus Moilee. Get stuck into the Lamb Shank. Order the Beef Curry Pie. Have a Kerala cocktail. Come for Sunday roast.

Or simply come because you’re craving something different.
